Expect the unexpected (2/26- 3/1/12)

After returning from Brussels, I got some catching up to do.

Sunday as I’ve posted before was a random trip to the beach.

singing, dancing, playing duo… they had a chill sound

sick mural on one of the shops

La Rambla del Mar

tempting very tempting…

Monday, was just an average day in studio where I learned that a friend from class Gerardo was planning to go to a salsa bar and said we could join him once he had the details. I messaged my dance partner Joe and my partner in crime Allison. We have wanted to go salsa dancing since we’ve been here. It was going down.

Had a lovely lunch at an Irish pub with the rooms.

Later on that night, found out salsa dancing wasn’t happening because everyone decided to be good students and do homework. Homework. Jeez ruin everything why don’t ya.

Allison made mushroom risotto. I made green beans lol.

On Tuesday, another typical day in lecture, but it was extra long because Katrin had an engagement in Boston Wednesday. I doodled on my notes so I would pay attention (somehow that seems like an oxymoron). Learned about a great deal on monuments in Germany. I was too excited for that trip in two weeks. After regular field studies class, we visited EMBT architecture firm next door to our studio. They have some great work and you should check them out.

Allison made french toast for dinner as we practiced our French via youtube videos (we sounded hilarious I’m sure from the outside looking in because we were wearing headphones, but practicing out loud).

I gotta say this week didn’t seem to be exciting. Maybe it was saving up for Brussels.

Business time! Leap day! Wednesday no class!!! So after venturing off to Glories to the big Carrefour for groceries (while wearing my swimsuit under all my clothes because Beach day Leap day was going down) I went to the beach again to get some work done after packing a small lunch of a turkey sandwich, grapes, jello, and cookies.

Great decision.

It was beautiful out and peaceful.

this is actually an artificial beach. i did learn something from class lol.

i did get some work done i guess lol

After some time though, it got cold, people started puff puff passing, couples started making out EVERYWHERE, and naked man decided to strut across the beach. I can take a hint… time to go.

Walking down the beach, through alleys to get further inland, I was stopped randomly and asked if I was Cubana… Why can’t I just be black lol? I’m a chameleon.

love finding graffiti

Back at RESA, it was TACO NIGHT in our room. I made some pretty tacos I gotta admit.

For dessert, a crowd favorite of strawberries and chocolate.

Thursday, gotta love the new Friday.

After working on the model for studio on Wednesday night, I just wanted to sleep Thursday… so I went to class a wee bit late, but it didn’t matter because I was banking on Toni, my professor to be late as usual. I was surprised to see him there, but the room was being arranged so that there was enough room for the Japanese students who would be visiting next week. Needless to say, no desk crits today. Brenda and I did, however get a once over our model and work and Toni didn’t seemed so enthused. Mid way through class, we had a guest lecturer who is a geographer for Barcelona. Apparently he’s kinda a big deal here. His lecture was actually pretty interesting and helpful to the project. After class, Allison and I joined Abe and Joseph the grad students and Joe at a little café near studio for lunch. Joe eats there all the time come to find out.

Got to know the guys a little more which is always good. Sidenote: the Simpsons were on the tv and later on the news we heard about the student protests from Wednesday (Katrin, and BAC sent us an email basically telling us to be careful). Ate a bocadillo and headed off to change for Ivan’s class. We traveled to L’Hospitalet de Llobregat and saw some great architecture with TAMU. We haven’t been out together for one class since the bike tour (I don’t think studio counts because we are in the same room, but separate by schools and again in pairs for the project). It was cool to see everyone talking and having fun on this field study.

After class I was invited to go rock climbing near Monjuïc with Brent, Joe, and Catlan. Allison decided to be a good student again and work on her project with Kisko. Hanging with the fellas. It was a fun walk there laughing and joking with the guys, then “getting into zen mode” lol not. The rock wall was in an old tunnel and it was the coolest thing to happen this week. I wasn’t legit like Joe and Brent who have climbing shoes so I went barefoot. Hey, I could grip the rocks better that way. I knew I didn’t have upper body strength so my goal is to get some pullups in. I watched the other climbers, their very graceful movements. Each has their own technique and it was super chill in there. Catlan wasn’t feeling the climb and left early, but Brent, Joe and I eventually left. Saw some more city at night, love exploring.

Spur of the moment the guys invented me to go out to the jazz club with them and some of the other guys (i should let you know that Allison and I were leaving for Brussels at 5:30 the next morning… I figured I could sleep on the way lol). They said we should meet up in twenty minutes after getting back from the 45 minute walk home. I think they forgot I was a girl lol. I quickly ran in my room said hi to Allison and Kisko explaining where the rock wall was and where I was going next, hopped in the shower, washed, but not condition, my hair, toweled off, got dressed made a left over taco that Allison left out (left it cold), grabbed some accessories and bobby pins, ran to the elevator, rode down, ran to the other side of RESA, rode up the elevator and knocked on Joe’s door. No answer. So I went over to Brent’s, his neighbor. I’m starting to notice a pattern with that Joe kid lol.  Mind you, I made it over to Brent’s at exactly twenty minutes after arriving back to find out that no one was ready yet. FAIL. Brent was dressed, but making dinner, Joe was in the shower still, Catlan eventually ventured over, and Bent called Lewis and Alvin to come over. I COULD HAVE CONDITIONED MY HAIR AND ATE IN THE ROOM lol. While waiting for everyone to arrive, I ate my taco, fixed my hair, and talked to Brent and his roommate Casey who came back from America because his chipped his tooth. Everyone eventually made it to the room, but Joe. He was last and according to Catlan and Brent I should always expect Joe to be the last one (and I thought everyone would be waiting on me and I was the first one lol).

After picking on Joe for a little while, we all go to Glaciar for a little while because the live band was leaving soon. We talked and chilled in there for a bit, then made our way over to Polaroid, the 80s theme bar for more fun. We didn’t stay there very long because it was crowded and ventured off to another place that we quickly left because it was overpriced. I haven’t been a bar hopper but it was pretty fun. Because the guys still wanted drinks we made our way to Queen Vic. Joe must have gotten my brainwave because I wanted to go dancing. Of course none of the other guys wanted to do that so, my unofficial dance buddy and I went to Café Royale again. This time there was a live band who had a great set and we had a great time. He’s a cool kid that Joe and is becoming more and more interesting each time we hang out.

I really enjoyed that part of the night, but I was feeling dizzy because I realized that I didn’t eating enough for dinner and we had been out and about. Blood sugar was dropping. So after a fantastic time dancing, Joe and I meet up with the other guys at Vic where good ol’ Larry gave me some juice. Yay sugar! The guys seemed to have a great time while we were away based on the glasses on the counter and the happy dispositions and loud convos. Gotta say, hanging out with the guys was an awesome time.

I returned to my room after saying goodbye to only Joe because half of the guys left and walked off really fast and the other half stayed at the bar. It was 3ish before I finally got in the bed and my alarm was set for 4:45. Sounds like a catnap to me lol. I messaged my good friends back home Melissa and Julia telling them I would fill them in with the night’s adventures. Best day of the week followed by Wednesday and Sunday’s beach time.

Song in my head that ended my week “Butterflies” by Michael Jackson. Love this song. Brussels blog soon with all it’s chocolately wafflely goodness soon :)

Don’t think, just do and expect the unexpected. I did this week and I’m glad I did (although I’m still a bit fuzzy on some of the results this week like our studio project)

Muchos Besos,

Jazz <3
